ABOUT ME

Claire Victoria Watson

I am an artist, illustrator, and independent graphic designer based in Victoria on Vancouver Island BC. Inspired by the wild beauty of the West Coast, I create artwork that connects people to nature. Whether I’m working on commercial projects or personal pieces, my goal is always to capture the spirit of adventure and the outdoors.

My Why

It’s all about creativity and freedom! I create because I genuinely love it. I’m driven by curiosity, connection, and the challenge of capturing a feeling in a way that resonates with others. Having grown up mostly on the coast, I’ve spent my life on the water and in the forests, sailing, hiking, and exploring. I began working for myself after having my girls, and I have never looked back. The independence and freedom isn’t something I would trade for anything. I’m drawn to the ever-changing landscapes of the west coast. It may sound cliché, but nature and exploration is my biggest inspiration, and through my art, I hope to bring a little of that magic into people’s lives.

Mediums and Style

I enjoy a multitude of mediums, and there always seems to be a combination of precision and spontaneity in my work. The detailed fine line pen & ink, the unpredictable fluidity of watercolour, the boldness and textures of acrylic, the tactile process of printmaking, and the edginess of spray paint. I also love to illustrate digitally, as it allows me the freedom to experiment and make efficient changes (especially when it comes to commercial work) and I take my studio anywhere.

My work blends intricate yet stylized details, organic colour palettes, nature inspired textures, and coastal influences across paper, canvas, apparel, surfboards and more.

My Work

My art journey started many years ago with hand painted chalkboard signs and evolved organically into a full time freelance creative career. I’ve since worked with many high-profile clients, brands and organizations, including Patagonia, HSBC, Buff, BC Ferries, Surf Canada, Surfrider Foundation, and Tourism Vancouver Island. I have also designed four coins for the Royal Canadian Mint, including the circulation loonie honouring Elsie MacGill.

My work spans illustration, branding, typography, and children’s books.

Fun Facts

When I’m not in my studio, I’m usually outside... cycling, running, walking the dog or hiking. I’ve moved far too many times to count (Victoria and area, Gabriola Island and Tofino), and I’ve lived in vans, houses, and sailboats (maybe that’s why I can’t sit still). I’m grateful for the little things, and love a good coffee...especially outside in the sunshine. I nerd out over weather patterns, clouds and stars. I’ll pick sun rise over sunset... just. I’ve been a volunteer fire-fighter (and yes, teased for my size driving big firetrucks), raced bicycles in Italy, hiked the Alps, sailed to Mexico. I am always up for new challenges and trying new things. Currently, I’m training for my first 50km ultra trail race. This summer you’ll find me at a select few markets and festivals, and training on the trails. I believe life is meant to be lived.
